Mrs. Torres-Perez is Bergen County Academies’ new Spanish teacher who’s had 16 years of teaching experience. Mrs. Torres-Perez teaches Spanish 1-2, Spanish 2, and Spanish 3 classes. She also helps the Wednesday Club “Yearbook Club.”
The Academy Chronicle interviewed Mrs. Torres-Perez so that students at BCA could get to know her better. The Academy Chronicle asked various questions about her teaching style, why she teaches, and a little about her.
Academy Chronicle: What inspired you to become a teacher?
Mrs. T-P: I was originally an industrial engineer in Cuba, but I’ve always had a passion for teaching. After moving to the U.S. 20 years ago, I decided to become a Spanish teacher to help students develop multilingual skills. Speaking multiple languages opens doors in both careers and personal experiences, and I wanted to be part of that journey for my students. Teaching has been incredibly rewarding, and I truly love what I do.
AC: Why did you choose BCA?
Mrs. T-P: After teaching at St. Peter’s Prep for 16 years, I wanted to move into public education. BCA stood out because of its strong academic reputation, innovative learning environment, and emphasis on student excellence. The school fosters creativity and prepares students for success in a way that aligns with my teaching philosophy. It was the perfect place for me to continue my career.
AC: How do you address different learning needs in your classroom?
Mrs. T-P: I recognize that every student learns differently, so I incorporate a variety of teaching methods. I use visual aids, interactive apps, music, and group activities to engage all types of learners. For example, I integrate games and digital tools like Spanish Dictionary and Word Wall to reinforce vocabulary. My goal is to make learning Spanish both accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
AC: What is your teaching philosophy?
Mrs. T-P: I believe in student-centered learning, where students actively use the language rather than just memorizing vocabulary. I design lessons that simulate real-life situations, such as discussing family traditions or planning a trip in Spanish. This way, students see how the language applies to their everyday lives. The goal is for them to feel confident using Spanish in practical settings.
AC: Are you enjoying your first year at BCA?
Mrs. T-P: Absolutely! The students are bright, motivated, and eager to learn, which makes teaching very enjoyable. I also appreciate the school’s focus on innovation and academic excellence. It has been a wonderful experience so far, and I look forward to the rest of the year. The school assemblies, where I get to see students showcase their talents and school spirit are some of my favorite things of the school year so far, it’s inspiring to be part of such a vibrant community. I can’t wait to continue building relationships with these talented students.
AC: What do you enjoy outside of school?
Mrs. T-P: I love live jazz concerts, traveling, cooking, and dancing. Last year, my husband and I traveled to Mexico, and it was an unforgettable experience. I also enjoy watching classic movies, especially those from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Exploring different cultures and experiences outside of work enriches my teaching perspective.
AC: Can you tell us more about yourself as a Cuban?
Mrs. T-P: My family is from Cuba, with Spanish and Portuguese roots. I left in 1995 and haven’t returned, but I stay connected to my heritage through music, food, and traditions. The Cuban American community has helped keep these traditions alive for me. Music and dance, in particular, are essential to Cuban culture, and I love sharing that with others.
AC: And that is it. Thank you for this wonderful interview. The students and staff will get to know you better from this interview.
Mrs. T-P: Thank you.
The Academy Chronicle thanks Mrs. Torres-Perez for taking the time to sit down for this interview. The interview has helped the students of BCA gain great insight into Mrs. Torres-Perez’s teaching style, opinions, and a little bit about her.
