As the 2023-2024 school year unfolds, BCA witnesses the rise of new freshmen leadership. Among these students, we sat down with the newly elected president and vice president of the Class of 2027, the pioneers of the next chapter in our school’s student government. Aidan Kim, the freshman president, known for his prior experience as a middle school president, brings a confident and sociable demeanor to his role. Along with him is Esther Jung, the vice president who may be new to the student council, but is very passionate about helping others. In this interview, we will delve into the aspirations and visions that drive our student leaders. Our focus is on capturing their plans for the future, exploring the new ideas they wish to introduce, and their vision for student government for generations to come.
AC: Can you share a bit about yourselves and what inspired you to run for the positions of president and vice president?
AK: Hi, I’m Aidan Kim (AK), the freshman president of BCA. I ran based on my prior experience as a middle school president, feeling confident in my ability to represent the class. I’m a pretty friendly guy and aimed to be the voice of our freshmen. Beyond student government, I’m really into participating in winter track and spring track. I’m also involved in DECA and I love listening to music.
EJ: Hi, I’m Esther Jung (EJ), the freshman VP of BCA. I ran because I’m passionate about helping others. While I didn’t know much about student council in middle school, I enjoyed being part of a dedicated group helping my classmates. Outside of this role, I love dancing, exercising, or doing anything active.
AC: What are your primary goals for the Class of 2027 during your term in office?
AK: Generally, I want to boost the morale of our freshman class. We, of course, need to ensure the events are sustainable and within our means to accomplish effectively. As far as big events go, we’re considering athletic events and a cooking show that will highlight teamwork and competition.
EJ: I want the freshman class to feel confident in choosing us as their leaders. In terms of plans, prioritizing funding is necessary for our major events to be successful and enjoyable. Adding a prize incentive to the fundraising is one approach we’re thinking about to ensure active participation.
AC: Based on your experiences, what skills or qualities do you think are crucial for effective student leaders?
AK: Well, leaders have to be a “people’s person.” I don’t think this necessarily means being extroverted but having the empathy to connect with others. Understanding people is essential to effective leadership. Also, pride in representing our group is crucial for its success– after all, “we are BCA.”
EJ: Along with what Aidan said, mindset is key in defining a great leader. While physical traits do matter, the drive to help others is what truly sets apart a remarkable leader. You have to be “in the zone”, and demonstrate the commitment to serve the students. A leader should not only inspire but also actively engage with the team to achieve collective success.
AC: How do you envision your legacy at BCA and where do you see yourself in 30 years? (The Academy Chronicle is celebrating its 30th anniversary)
AK: That is a difficult question, but ultimately, I want to be remembered as a good leader, who achieved something noteworthy, leaving an impact. I also want my classmates to recall the connections we shared during our time here. Visualizing myself on the school TV is also a big goal. Being in ABF directs me to the business world, but I have yet to decide what specialization I want to spend my future doing. For now, I’m building up my skills to become a better “businessman”.
EJ: Reflecting on my journey at BCA, I cherish the small steps taken to achieve our goals.-these often-overlooked moments are significant to me. It’s essential for my friends and classmates to remember who I was as a person. Additionally, as part of the AEDT academy, I’m fascinated with all the diverse pathways available for my future, but I want to make an impact in the modern world through technology, it’s the path that really motivates and excites me.
As Aidan Kim and Esther Jung, leaders of the class of 2027, share their aspirations, it’s obvious that their vision extends beyond their term. We extend our gratitude to both leaders for sharing their thoughts. Their insights provide a promising glimpse into the future of BCA!
