On Saturday 21st, the BCA Model UN team competed at the annual Horace Mann Model UN conference. The conference hosted hundreds of delegates from around the tri state area. Committees this year ranged from DISEC and SPECPOL, all the way to a Taylor Swift Crisis. BCA’s team sent an impressive 27 delegates this year.
The Academy Chronicle was lucky enough to interview three of the most successful delegates this year; Suzu Hirari, Mia Subrahmanyam, and Secretary General Kyrstal Jiang. Each of them won impressive awards including a gavel for Best Delegate.
Mia Subrahmanyam, a sophomore in ACTS represented Russia in the SOCHUM committee. Suzu Hirai, a sophomore, represented Luxembourg in DISEC and Krystal Jiang represented Russia in SPECPOL. Mia started MUN in the 6th grade while Suzu and Krystal have been delegates since 7th grade.
When asked about their favorite thing about HOMMUNC, Suzu stated, “My favorite part was becoming closer with the BCA MUN team as I was in the same committee as my fellow delegates.”
Krystal responded, “My favorite thing was definitely getting to meet a lot of the delegates from different private schools. Especially Dalton kids and the head delegate at Dalton. Oh and getting voted cutest del 4 times!”
The Academy Chronicle then asked them what their least favorite thing about HOMMUNC was and Krystal stated, “Honestly the stress behind it, [and] the fact that I had to represent Russia which was an ethical dilemma, but you have to portray it in a way to win which can be challenging but it’s what makes it fun!”
Suzu then stated, “Some countries like the UK received a note that was supposedly from me that I did not write that was mildly inappropriate and they refused to have a merger with me because of it which I was really upset about.”
Lastly, Mia responded, “When you’re in an environment where you’re kind of going in as an underdog […] a lot of the other delegates know each other, so when you go in not knowing anyone else it takes time to establish relationships with other people.”
Overall, BCA’s Model UN team did an amazing job at the 2023 Horace Mann Model UN conference, taking home 5 awards, including a Best Delegate award for Suzu! Everyone was able to converse with each other and other delegates from all over and hopefully made friendships. The BCA MUN team is looking forward to their next conference, PMUNC in November and the Academy Chronicle wishes them the best of luck!
