What does it really take to be a student council member at BCA? This team works hard to improve student life and strengthen the school community. The BCA Student Council is supervised by advisors Mr. Madden and Mrs. Beato. It consists of three grade representatives, who also run the student executive board. The Academy Chronicle met with a 10th-grade representative for the student council, Olivia Kim, to discuss her experience and vision for BCA. She has served in the Student Council since 9th grade, making it her second year as a member.
“As a freshman, I was new to many things and learned from the upperclassmen in Student Council. Now, as a sophomore, I have gained the experience and confidence to take on leadership roles, and I’m excited to pass on what I’ve learned to the incoming freshmen as well.”
Mentorship is key to fostering a positive environment within the Student Council. The upperclassmen provide practical advice on how to run meetings and organize events, but also give emotional support, helping new members adjust.
In her first year, Olivia played a significant role in organizing various events that brought the school community together. These included seasonal pep rallies and fundraising events, which were met with lots of support and participation from students. However, her favorite project was hosting the BCA Fall Ball. The Fall Ball is a yearly dance in October, hosted by the Student Council. It is one of the most popular events for BCA students at the beginning of the school year.
“What made it so special was the fact that our team had full control over planning and executing the entire event from start to finish. It was exciting to see our ideas come to life, from selecting the theme and decorations to coordinating music, food, and ticket sales. I never realized just how much hard work and detail went into organizing a large-scale event until I was directly involved.” After all their hard work, seeing everyone enjoying themselves at the dance made her feel like all her efforts were worth it.
Olivia’s dedication to the Student Council is evident in her commitment to fostering school spirit and inclusivity. Her leadership style focuses on collaboration and listening to the voices of her peers, ensuring that the council’s initiatives reflect the diverse interests and needs of the student body.
“Right now, we’re focused on organizing our spring pep rally and planning exciting future events, including school dances, spirit weeks, and more!”
In addition, they are working to introduce new initiatives, like de-stress fests. Each event is carefully thought out to promote school spirit, ensuring every student feels valued and part of the BCA community. By organizing various activities, they aim to find something for everyone.
The council offers an open space for students who wish to contribute their own opinions and ideas. Meetings are held every Monday at 7:00 AM in Mr. Madden’s room. Whether you have suggestions or concerns, your input is valued. The council is here to listen, support, and make a positive difference in your BCA life!
