Music, often referred to as a universal language, can stimulate emotions, memories, and physical responses. Music therapy uses this power to promote healing and well-being.
One inspiring example of music therapy in action is Solis and Luna Arts, a BCA club dedicated to bringing the healing power of music to those in need.
“The reason as to why I started Solis and Luna Arts is due to my previous music therapy experiences with my grandfather, who was a veteran of the Vietnam War,” explained Chloe Cho, the club president. “Throughout my life, I had witnessed my grandfather’s depression get better year after year thanks to music therapy, and I wanted to expand this healthcare treatment to be more accessible to all.”
The main mission of Solis and Luna Arts is to provide comfort and joy to patients with physical and mental health issues.
“We wish to better patients’ memories with our music because music therapy is known for helping Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients regain their memories,” Chloe said.
In order to accomplish their goals, Solis and Luna Arts organize various events.
“We usually perform musical concerts at different venues around the world,” Chloe shared. “We ask the venue what songs they would like to hear and prepare covers of those songs. However, sometimes, we also hold floral events, where we bring floral donations to the venues and make floral arrangements with the patients.”
One of the most memorable events for the club was performing Bohemian Rhapsody at New Bridge Medical Center.
“It happened to be a song that everyone knew, and we were overjoyed when everyone in the auditorium began to sing along and smile,” Chloe said.
Looking ahead, Chloe hopes to continue Solis and Luna Arts for the rest of her life. “It’s something I enjoy doing, as I can always see the great effect our music therapy concerts have on patients,” she said.
The club is particularly excited about an upcoming concert at the Veterans Home in June. “It’s the first time we’re doing a floral event and a musical concert at once, so I’m hoping everything goes as planned and the veterans can find it enjoyable.”
What sets Solis and Luna Arts apart is their unique approach to helping patients with disabilities and disorders. “Instead of trying to fundraise for medicines or advocate for popular treatments, Solis and Luna Arts expand the concept of music therapy, which is a niche healthcare treatment but has great effects,” Chloe explained.
Music therapy in hospitals can relieve pain and anxiety, leading to better recovery among patients. It is also beneficial in educational settings, supporting students with special needs by promoting communication and social skills. These sessions are personalized to improve attention, behavior, and academic performance, contributing to a more inclusive learning environment.
Through initiatives like Solis and Luna Arts, the transformative power of music therapy continues to reach and positively impact more lives, proving that music is not just an art form, but a pathway to healing and well-being. As our understanding of music therapy’s benefits expands, its role in healthcare and wellness is sure to grow, offering unique ways to support and treat people.
Solis and Luna Arts show how music therapy can be a powerful way to heal and bring people together, proving that music really is a universal healer.
